Ex-Disney Staffer Confesses to Hacking Menu System to Alter Allergy Details

An ex-Disney staff member, terminated for improper behavior, has confessed to infiltrating the firm’s menu design software to modify crucial elements, including food allergy data, which potentially endangered guests at the resort’s dining establishments.

A complaint filed by the Justice Department the previous year alleged that an individual named Michael Scheuer engaged in numerous computer offenses following his dismissal from the corporation where he was employed. The affected organization was unnamed in the complaint; however, further reports identified the company as Disney. Presently, it has been reported that Scheuer, who previously held the position of “Menu Production Manager” at the company, has confessed to the computer-related offenses as part of a plea agreement.

Court Watch states Scheuer has consented to provide compensation to Disney and to pay a government penalty. Scheuer’s attorney, David Haas, reportedly declared: “Mr. Scheuer is ready to take responsibility for his actions. Regrettably, he has mental health challenges that worsened after Disney terminated him upon his reentry from paternity leave.” Haas further mentioned: “No harm was ever imminent to anyone, and he profoundly regrets what transpired.”

When contacted for remarks by Gizmodo, Haas verified the report from Court Watch, while clarifying that a plea date was not yet determined. The plea date is when a defendant formally submits a guilty plea, subsequent to a plea arrangement being established between the defense lawyer and the prosecutor.

Scheuer’s assaults on the corporation purportedly spanned a duration of three months. Throughout that period, he “altered the menus of dining venues owned and managed by” Disney, as the initial complaint articulates. The more “benign” of these intrusions involved modifying various menus by shifting their font to Wingdings, thereby making them unintelligible. In alternate situations, Scheuer purportedly inserted offensive language into the menus. The most severe offenses, however, involved Scheuer’s attempts to modify allergen details on the menus. Scheuer is additionally accused of executing denial-of-service attacks on the professional accounts of multiple former associates.

Court Watch shares extra insights into Scheuer’s alleged actions, according to newly uncovered court papers:

Scheuer altered the regions of origin for wines to areas associated with mass shootings. Court records indicate he, at one juncture, included a swastika on a menu. Scheuer also confessed to divulging the link and login he employed to modify the menus on the dark web.

Fortunately, none of the menus that Scheuer altered were ever disseminated to venues.

Disney faced an unrelated “wrongful death” lawsuit last year after a woman’s death occurred while she was dining at a restaurant situated on one of Disney’s Florida sites. The woman was allergic to nuts and dairy, and she and her spouse mistakenly received assurance from their waiter that the dish she ordered could be prepared without those elements. The lawsuit garnered attention after Disney tried to dismiss the case based on a mandatory arbitration clause contained in the couple’s Disney+ trial membership. Following widespread criticism, Disney announced it would cease its gross legal maneuvering and allow the lawsuit to proceed to trial.
