Heartwarming Drone Footage Unveils the Rescue of a Lost Dog with a Broken Leg

In Illinois, a canine lost for seven days was located on Sunday with assistance from a nearby animal rescue group and a drone with thermal imaging. The instance of the pup’s discovery is so delightfully uplifting that it’s likely you’ll find yourself watching the rescue more than once, just as we did.

The saga began on Dec. 31, when a Bernese Mountain Dog called Charlie vanished in the Crystal Lake vicinity of northern Illinois. Charlie’s owner, Kate Belmonte, was understandably heartbroken and posted updates on Facebook regarding Charlie.

“He lacks his collar,” Belmonte noted. “He is quite affable and lively but might be wary of strangers. He remains a puppy and likely cannot navigate his way home. He enjoys roaming near ponds and marshlands. Please alert me if you notice anything!!”

Belmonte received support from Dog Gone Pet Recovery, a local pet rescue team, which sought the aid of Smithic Air for drone assistance. The drone’s thermal imaging capability makes it feasible to identify warm items on the terrain.

Dog Gone Pet Recovery and Smithic Air posted a video on Facebook and YouTube displaying the scene on Jan. 5 when Charlie was identified, and you can view that small orange speck as they lock onto Charlie before transitioning to a standard camera to verify it’s him. Witnessing their clear emotional response upon finding him is quite touching.

Charlie was located mere minutes away from his residence but was unable to walk due to a fractured femur. It is presumed he was struck by a vehicle.

The local ABC News station conversed with Belmonte and her fiancé about the rescue, lauding the “remarkable technology” that facilitated Charlie’s return.

“David and I are utterly astounded by the community support we’ve experienced,” Belmonte commented on Facebook. “Despite only residing here for a short while, we have met so many extraordinary individuals (albeit under these unfortunate circumstances). Thousands have reached out with kindness and well wishes 🙏 and we’re deeply grateful to all who kept an eye out for Charlie!!”

“You are all such incredible people!! If only Charlie realized he has become the community star lol,” Belmonte continued.

The family has initiated a GoFundMe to assist with Charlie’s medical expenses, garnering over $5,200 at the point of this writing.
